fear, overcoming fear

Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea,
I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Although fear is perfectly natural and normal, it is also sometimes useless and often immobilizing. Of course, no one would blame you for having some fear if you are diagnosed with AIDS, and it’s even quite normal for people to be fearful of bad grades, bad job evaluations and bad turns in relationships. wall, ancient wallThere is great inspiration in the biblical story of Nehemiah. The book of Nehemiah discusses how the Jewish exiles returned to Jerusalem from Babylon. Nehemiah, a Jewish cupbearer to the Persian King, received grace from the king in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. The walls had been torn down during the Babylonian captivity of the Jewish people. Ultimately, Nehemiah and other Jewish people began rebuilding the walls in the midst of great opposition from the Persians. Nonetheless, the Jews built the wall in defiance.

Aside from the physical rebuilding of the Jerusalem walls, a more important rebuilding process was underway. That is, Nehemiah led Israel back to God. Essentially, Israel wanted to demonstrate that they were committed to reclaiming their lives and returning to the proper worship of God. See Nehemiah 2 for the full scripture. Nehemiah 2:17 follows: Continue Reading »

– Romans 12:2

I remember going to second grade wearing a striped shirt, green corduroy pants and open-toed, leather-looking sandals. Sure, it was the 70s, but I really don’t think that’s what everyone else was wearing in my school. What I’m trying to say is that I’ve never had trouble being a nonconformist. Continue Reading »

live for today, relax, relaxing

Mat 6:34  Take therefore no thought for the morrow:

for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.

Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

If you attended or are attending college—or even high school, for that matter—you probably remember getting a syllabus on the first day of class. Continue Reading »

SAN FRANCISCO - DECEMBER 05: Runners compete ...

My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.
– James 1:2-4

Do you consider the problems and issues of your life joyful? I hope you do, because I can’t think of any better way to handle them. However… Continue Reading »

breadIn his book God’s Psychiatry, Charles L. Allen tells a story to which very few of us can immediately relate, but it is a story that can have meaning for us if we look beyond the obvious. Here it is:

As World War II was drawing to a close, the Allied armies gathered up many hungry orphans. They were placed in camps where they were well-fed … Despite excellent care, they slept poorly. They seemed nervous and afraid. Finally, a psychologist came up with the solution. Each child was given a piece of bread to hold after he was put to bed. This particular piece of bread was just to be held—not eaten. The piece of bread produced wonderful results. The children went to bed knowing instinctively they would have food to eat the next day. That guarantee gave the children a restful and contented sleep. Continue Reading »
